The species of ruby is corundum, simply crystallized alumina (Al2O3) and in pure form it is devoid of colour. The rich color in ruby is mainly due to the small amount of cronic oxide, which is able to replace part of the alumina without disturbing the trigonal crystal structure. Its specific gravity is 4.00. The average refractive index is 1.76 - 1.77 and the hardness is 9 on the Mohs scale, the optic character DR is 0.008.
